soyka review

ok, i guess i can't be all sunshine and rainbows all the time. so my first burn... soyka's. i feel like everyone and their mom loves soykas. when i saw the building... i loved it. when i walked through the doors... i loved it. when i ordered dinner... uugh. but, everyone says the food is amazing. so was i missing something? did they have an off night? so i went again, and again, and again, and again, and again... cause i live soooo f-ing close and all my friends love soyka and i wanted it to be great. hell, i would've even settled for good.
in the nine or ten (maybe more) times i've been to soyka's, spanning well over a year, i've tried burgers and pastas and salads and wood-fired pizzas and the food's been okay at best. and in the process, i've learned a few things...
+ great ambince
+ adorable, romantic little back alley
- slow service
- shitty acoustics
- less than desirable food
my last time going i even said... "this WILL be the LAST time i go to soyka's, unless the food is good." i ordered the steak, figuring as long as they don't over cook it, it should be half decent. it should renew my faith in soykas and humanity. i usually eat my steak medium, but i ordered it medium rare, just to play it safe. and even made it very clear to our server, that i would even prefer it under cooked than over cooked. hell, bring it to me raw, i'll cut it very thin and pretend it's a carpaccio. well, the server brought my steak out... well-done. but not just well-done, charred. imagine well-done and then cook it on high for 10 more min. which makes me fault not only the kitchen, but my server as well.
why, soyka, why?!?!
"There's an old saying in Tennessee — I know it's in Texas, probably in Tennessee — that says, fool me once, shame on — shame on you. Fool me — you can't get fooled again." god, am i dumber than bush for getting fooled this many times?! don't answer than!

I totally agree with you about Soyka. Love the space and the ambiance, but the food does nothing but disappoint. It is so BLAH!

The food sux at Soyka. That being said, I still go quite a bit because the space is great, and the people are generally very nice. The bartenders are cool. Drink prices are reasonable. It's a good place to start off a night.
If you have to eat there, at least you can see/hear the person you are with. Just order very basic, and don't expect anything from the food.
The pizzas are decent, and the mac and cheese is great. otherwise...
